From The Battlefield to the Ballot Box: Jason Crow’s Sad Sell-Out of Our Constitutional Rights
Jason Crow, the Democratic candidate in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District, has built his political career on protecting the civil rights of others while attacking our own. Crow, a former Army Ranger, has served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded a Bronze Star award for his combat actions. But in Washington, Crow, who is up for reelection, has worked diligently to strip Americans of their Constitutional 2nd Amendment rights during his tenure.
A decorated serviceman and an avid hunter, Crow claims to be a lifelong supporter of the Second Amendment and someone who will fight for every Coloradan’s right to bear arms. “Jason knows we don't have to choose between Second Amendment protections and safer communities,” reads his website. However, Jason Crow’s record on gun legislation paints an entirely different picture than what his campaign rhetoric suggests.
Crow has voted in favor of every single piece of gun control legislation since 2019.
In 2021, he supported H.R.8, a.k.a. the “Universal Background Check” bill, which would not only do nothing to combat the actual source of illegal firearms possession, but would also endanger the lives of countless victims of domestic abuse, stalking, and other violent crime. In a study conducted by the US National Institutes for Health, a team of researches found “no evidence of an association between the repeal of comprehensive background check policies and firearm homicide and suicide rates.” Data from the US Department of Justice also shows that: “Fewer than 1 in 50 (less than 2%) of all prisoners had obtained a firearm from a retail source and possessed, carried, or used it during the offense for which they were imprisoned.”
Jason Crow is also a co-sponsor for House Resolution 1808, which is perhaps the most aggressive and overreaching gun control legislation ever introduced in Congress. HR1808 would ban the sale, import, manufacture, transfer, and possession of nearly all semi-automatic rifles and rifle-caliber handguns, as well as magazines carrying more than ten rounds. The legislation specifically names more than 40 different AR-style rifles and more than 30 AK style rifles. Both of which, statistically, are used in the overwhelming minority of shootings. (According to FBI data from 2019, nearly twice as many people are killed by hands, fists, and feet every year than they are by rifles – and nearly twenty times as many people are killed by handguns than by rifles.)
H.R. 1808 also includes a specific exception which stipulates that police officers, military, and even former police and military can still own whatever weapons they please. In other words, Jason Crow can own whatever weapons he likes while stripping his constituents of the same right.
Jason Crow doesn’t just want to restrict the certain types of weapons you can own, he wants to corrode our 2nd Amendment rights in principle. In September 2021, Crow publicly noted his opposition to the landmark Supreme Court ruling New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v Bruen, which deemed it unconstitutional for the State of New York to restrict concealed carry handgun permits and only deliver them on a per need basis. Despite his insistence that he is a supporter of our 2nd Amendment rights, his opposition to NYSPRA v Bruen suggests that he thinks Americans should only have the right to defend themselves only as politicians and government officials see fit.
Violent crime and shootings are skyrocketing in Colorado. Instead of attacking peaceful, law-abiding citizens and infringing on their constitutional rights, Jason Crow should actually divert his attention to the real factor driving Colorado’s crime wave: its soft-on-crime policies which give violent criminals nothing to lose. All the while, he is trying to disarm the vast majority of law-abiding gun owners and preventing them from defending themselves, their family, and their property amidst surging crime.
